Summer 2025 Natural Wine Salons
A calendar of upcoming natural wine salons for June, July, and August 2025. Plus: a visit to Auvergne natural wine destination Hostel Orfenor, and a report on my 2023 vintage.
Greetings from a humid late spring in Burgundy! Just how the local winegrowers are managing to decide when to spray treatments amid the intermittent downpours and heat spells boggles the mind of this on-looker. I’m told mildew is already on the march in the Mâconnais...
The ever-jovial Antoine Robert of Domaine Robert-Denogent was nonetheless in fine form two Saturdays ago, at the Burgundy stag party weekend of Beaujolais vigneron Yann Bertrand, organized by our friend Jules Métras. The revelers kindly spent a long lunch at La Cave du Centre; in true Beaujolais style, they left the wine shelves significantly depleted and the menu on the mirror defaced with lewd puns and drawings of penises. Moments like this are precisely why I opened a restaurant in a wine region.
Anyway, as has become tradition, I’ve compiled a calendar of upcoming natural wine salons for Summer 2025. The calendar below covers June through August 2025. Much information is still to-be-confirmed; please check back on the Substack for updates. Organizers: if I’ve overlooked your event, please get in touch!
New and noteworthy salons this season include: the fifth edition of NOUVEL ORDRE, a salon in Brioude on June 15th organized by Hostel Orfenor proprietors Zach Watson and Laura Victor that unites the scrappy natural wine underground of Auvergne; the fourth edition of HAUT LES MAINS, Jon Purcell’s action-packed salon near Beaune featuring a cavalcade of dynamic young winemaker friends from Burgundy, the Jura, Baden, and beyond, on July 20th; and VIGNERON.N.E.S DU VIVANT EN BEAUJOLAIS, a new salon organized by Ludovic and Marie Gros in Blacé on June 14th, featuring twenty organic and / or natural vignerons from the Beaujolais, as well a demonstration of traditional blacksmithing and some of the greatest bread in France.1 (The Gros grow their own grains and mill them and bake the bread on site.)

DINING ON THE WINE TRAIL at HOSTEL ORFENOR, an AUVERGNE NATURAL WINE HOTEL-RESTAURANT by LAURA VICTOR and ZACH WATSON, whose work embodies the PLUCK and CAN-DO SPIRIT of the AUVERGNE NEO-PAYSAN NEW WAVE. (No paywall, except on a bonus INTERVIEW with WATSON.)
My THOROUGH RUN-DOWN of MY 2023 WINEMAKING ADVENTURES, which yielded about 800 bottles from ABANDONED VINEYARDS in the LANGUEDOC and the LOIRET.
I’ll have some of the latter wines with me at Haut Les Mains, and probably Nouvel Ordre. I hope to attend a few more salons this season, but it’s proving very difficult to get away on market days in Chagny, which are sort of a weekly mini-salon in themselves. Anyway, à très vite with more Alsace adventures, and a new regional issue, and of course more DROPLETS. Tchin!
